Two-unit modular traction substation

Works performed

Design, "turn-key" supply, installation works, commissioning

In December 2021, in Zgierz (Poland), PLUTON successfully put the two-unit modular traction substation into operation!

This project is of high importance for the Customer — "MPK Łódź" tram department because the implementation of modular traction substation allows providing power supply of contact network of the renovated tram line, that will connect Zgierz and Lodz,  located at a distance of 10 kilometers. This allows fast traffic of a tram between interurban stations, which in turn provides comfortable transportation for inhabitants of both cities, especially during peak hours. The tram is available for passengers since December, 20,  on the route «Helenówek — Plac Kilińskiego».

The modular traction substation produced by PLUTON included the following equipment:

  • MV switchgear 15 kV — 1 set;
  • dry-type cast-resin traction transformer, 1200 kVA — 2 units;
  • rectifier — 2 шт.;
  • DC switchgear 660 V with AFB arc-free circuit breakers — 7 units;
  • switchgear 660 V — 2 units;
  • operating current cabinet — 1 unit;
  • auxiliaries cabinet — 2 units;
  • auxiliaries dry-type transformer 40 kVA — 1 unit;
  • telecontrol cabinet — 1 unit.

Withdrawable rectifiers are installed into the DC board and placed in a row with DC switchgears 660 V for more compact equipment arrangement inside the module and maximally comfortable maintenance. DC switchgears include AFB arc-free ultra-high-speed circuit breakers. They have a high wear resistance and a long lifetime (more than 25 years) and provide high efficiency of traction network protection by preventing short circuit currents from raising to critical values that could damage contact network and substation equipment.

Control and monitoring of substation equipment are carried out due to modern telecontrol cabinet, equipped with redundancy controllers that support data transfer protocol according to international standards IEC. The panel computer of the telecontrol cabinet is used as the operator's automated workstation. It performs functions of control of substation power equipment state, as well as the processing of received data, archiving of information, visualization of current information on mnemonic diagrams, generation of events report, including emergency events. Telecontrol cabinet also contains equipment for connection to the operator's control center for remote traction substation control.

Both modules are equipped with ventilation, air conditioning, heating, lighting (emergency and working) systems, intrusion and fire detection system, as well as with access control and monitoring system, and security surveillance system.
